One Mans Medicine Is Another Mans Poison

The dangers and stigmas attached to substance abuse are obvious to us all I'm sure, but maybe some of you will change set attitudes on the subject once given a little food for thought.

Drugs come in many different guises and they're "easy" availability is a demon that most of us have to face these days whether on a personal level or as a parents of vulnerable teenagers.

Chemical abuse of one sort or another is at it's most rife in the "sports" world. This can be anything from steroids taken in pursuit of stamina or the "perfect body", over use of pain killers and anti depressants taken in an attempt to keep a "broken body" going, or "thrill seeking" recreational drugs such as cocaine, speed or heroine used by those who that fail to get a firm handle on their "fame and fortune". Of course there are many more different types of recreational drugs available, but I have chosen these as the common "career killers". It is only human nature to avoid such individuals (addicts) and label them as losers, but should we judge them so harshly? In my opinion, whether they be an ordinary Jo in the street or a well known celebrity they are all victims.victims of today's society, and it's social pressures and expectations. We have no right to "sit in judgement", or "look down our noses" at these victims, because we are all far from perfect. Some people have more addictive personalities than others, and therefore may not have the same strength of will as the man sat next to them. Take yourself for instance, and ask yourself what your addiction is, because we all have one or two for sure. Our bodies readily absorb and react to whatever we fuel them with right? We can get a "high" or a "buzz" from almost anything :-

Coffee (energy caffeine)
Sugar (short term energy stimulant)
Chocolate (contains stimulants that affect mood)
Alcohol (relaxant, mood enhancer and escapism)
Cigarettes ( nicotin's said to calm the nerves, also stimulates)
Glues (escapism)
Cannabis (natural relaxant, mood enhancer and medically used in pain management)
Food in general (compulsive comfort eating when stressed)
Extreme sexual activity ( reckless "anytime" "anyone" "any place" "anything goes" types)

This is just a short list that immediately sprang to mind, and all are potentially damaging to our physical and mental well-being when taken to excess. When we can't function properly without our "stimulant" we have a potential problem, just like that of the chemical dependant victim. Most of us misuse drugs or any of the short list in an attempt to combat stress or pressure, or as a form of escapism. if any of the above is "taken" to excess, it could result in the likes of :-

Cancer
Severe Depression
Obesity
Heart failure
Alcoholism
Liver and kidney failure
Mental illness and permanent nerve damage
Damaging and life threatening infections
Blood poisoning, to name but a few.

All posses the possibility of being addictive and potentially as self harming as any other form of drug taken to excess. Even music, shopping and exercise are "addictive". Whilst the first two might not "kill" you, you could still end up in serious financial difficulties, depressed and as a result even suicidal……..all as a result of human excessive "addiction". Excessive exercise can make you ill or put you in a early grave too. When you look at human weaknesses like this, you realize that none of us are perfect; we can all identify with something on that list that applies to us.

None of us know how circumstances are going to ultimately effect us…..none of us can tell what pain lies behind the eyes of someone under the influence of drugs. Our much loved wrestling superstars are under tremendous pressure to "look" their best physically and "perform" at their best at all times. The temptation to use muscle and stamina building steroids must be great...the temptation to mask injury and pain with pain killers must be even greater still. How much responsibility should wrestling companies and federations take for their victims of chemical dependency ? They seem to pick and choose which victims they help into rehabilitation whilst others are shown the door all too readily. I guess it comes down to your "crowd pulling monetary" value...what ever happened to the general value of humanity? It seems a callous way to operate to judge the "worth" of another human beings life by what money they can earn you. Life is harsh, business men like Vince MacMahon are harsh. I guess sadly they have to be, but in my opinion they have to take at least 70% of the blame for any problems of this manner. It's the likes of the wrestling federations that force these wrestlers back into the ring before they are physically ready to do so after injuries. No one is super human, and we all feel pain.if we are in constant pain we will take what ever help there is available to combat it this is where the problems start. These guys and girls spend most of their time injured, aching or just plain sore...it's the nature of the game I'm afraid. I know that they as individuals chose to be in this game, but I feel that they all deserve the support of such organizations when they fall victim to drug related problems. irrespective of where they stand in the roster. If the likes of Vince MacMahon were to ask the die hard fans of these wrestlers what they thought, I'm sure he'd be surprised by their comments.

Give our guys and girls the time and support they need to recover from injuries PROPERLY...give them more "well deserved" breaks with their families. We don't mind if they are missing from the ring for a few weeks or months. WE would rather that than risk losing them altogether. We don't want to see more of our favourite superstars fall by the way side through misuse of drugs through over work, injury or in pursuit of perfection. Take the pressure off them a little...you have more than enough talent to cover them in their possible absences surely?

I've recently read that Tom Libous a republican senator for New York, is now pushing a bill called "The Professional Wrestling Health and Safety Act". This could eventually result in blood or urine testing before matches to establish the presence of "drugs". How would the wrestlers feel about this? How would you feel about this? How would this affect the wrestling game in general? Cast your eyes over the following "short" list before you eventually make up your mind :-

Terry Gordy (former fabulous "free bird") April 1961 July 2001 Heavy drinker and drug user...died at 40 years of age.
Brian Pillman deceased in his prime drug overdose.
David Von Erich 1959-1984 Deceased,drug overdose-only 25yrs old
Micheal Von Erich - overdosed and died a few years after his brother.
Gino Hernandez - died from cocaine overdose - 29 years of age.
Bryan Adams - convicted for possession of anabolic steroids in 1995, still wrestling
Scott Hall - rumoured drink + drug related problems (no WWF contract)
Shawn Micheals - rumoured drink + drug related problems(no WWF contract)
Jake the Snake Roberts - a sad shadow of his former self through drink and drug abuse (self professed on "Beyond The Mat" video)
Brian Christopher (Grand Master Sexay)...fired for being in possession recently (even though he was eventually cleared - the drugs belonged to someone else)
Road Dog Jesse James - fired after repeated drug problems
Eddie Guerro - currently suffering from pain killer addiction and in rehab.

Pause for thought...
